Zune gets in tune with L.A.

For a sizable swath of Los Angeles media types, going to a club is so 2005.

The chic crowd would rather attend an event at a temporary space that feels more like a gallery. Beverage companies and lifestyle marketers have played to that audience, marrying their brands to sleek nights with slick music (most notably at the temporary pop-up Stoli Hotel "club" in Hollywood last year). And now Microsoft is upping the ante.

Perhaps forced into creative marketing by Apple's iPod, Microsoft's rival Zune player is jumping into the nightlife fray by launching a space that is carrying the product's name. The Seattle-area company is in it for the long haul, having signed a three-year lease at a venue on Beverly Boulevard.

Zune L.A., formerly photographer Greg Gorman's studio, serves as an office for a handful of the Microsoft music player's employees during the day, but, after dark at events such as last month's opening soiree, the tri-level space offers the company the opportunity to court L.A.'s tastemakers.

Chris Stephenson, Zune's general manager of global marketing, calls the space "a clubhouse for the creative community in L.A. -- a place for people to gather and connect that's designed for creative expression."

That expression, of course, takes on a different tone in the nightlife scene. At the christening, Zune wooed all manner of movers and shakers in the art, music and event-planning world with mojitos, music and visuals. Eastside promoter and Temporary Spaces founder Sean Patrick DJ'd (plugged into a Zune player, naturally) across from a custom light installation (an "interactive chandelier") from noted London-based artist Moritz Waldemeyer.

The space shares more in common with gallery/restaurant hybrids like the newly opened Royal-T in Culver City in that it is bright, airy and invites conversation, in contrast to the typical club where shop talk is barely audible. It features a rooftop patio, DJ booth and circular soundproofed music room suitable for hosting bands.

Jamaal Layne, project manager for Zune L.A., likens the experience of entering the space to "walking into an actual Zune."

Zune L.A. has hosted private events for groups such as CAA, and for now its offerings will remain invitation-only. Musicians such as Janelle Monae and former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford have already performed at Zune L.A., and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker will launch his line of New Era hats this month.

Its next event, on Tuesday, is a screening of “Joy Division: The Documentary” (followed by a 90-minute DJ set from Joy Division bass player Peter Hook).

Says Stephenson: "We envision Zune L.A. as a cultural hub."

So why is Microsoft debuting this concept in L.A., and not in Seattle or New York?

"We wanted to pick somewhere where we could not only feed off the cultural energy of the city but collaborate with the creative community to add to it," he says. "L.A. had the right mix of entertainment gravitas and growing cultural relevance within art and design."

ZUNE L.A. WHERE: 8275 Beverly Blvd. (at Sweetzer), L.A.

WHEN: Multiple private events monthly; next event is Tuesday featuring Peter Hook

PRICE: Invitation only

Kaisers hail "influential" McCartney

Kaiser Chiefs have argued that Sir Paul McCartney is one of the most 'influential people alive'.

The Leeds rockers performed with McCartney at the Liverpool Sound Concert at Anfield yesterday.

Speaking about their admiration for the former Beatle, bassist Simon Rix said: "I've said this before that I think Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are up there, if not the most influential people who are still alive.

"I don't know who is more influential than those two really, because I think that the influence of The Beatles, the impact that they had on everything at the time, not just music, you know your shoes and clothes and your hair and moustaches, everything, furniture - if The Beatles had never happened then we'd be living in a parallel universe."

McCartney was joined by Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl during Sunday's gig for renditions of 'Band On The Run' and 'Back In The USSR'.

Rob Lowe - Nanny Accuses Sheryl Lowe Of Crude And Racist Outburst

ROB LOWE's wife SHERYL has been accused of making racist and obscene comments to the family's former nanny about her black boyfriend's penis.

Laura Boyce filed a lawsuit on Wednesday (30Apr08) accusing Sheryl of sexual harassment and wrongful termination, insisting she created an "extremely sexually offensive and hostile work environment ... behaving in a ... perverted, disgusting and crude manner".

On Thursday (01May08) details of the lawsuit emerged.

Boyce claims an enraged Sheryl screamed at her that she "got strep throat from sucking n**ger d**k. I mean black d**k".

She further claims Sheryl used to constantly ask Boyce about the size of her boyfriend - reportedly NBA star Dale Davis' - penis and would often walk around the house naked.

The lawsuit also alleges Sheryl once told Boyce "her husband's (Rob) cockrings were broken", spoke about the couple's sex life and talked openly about the size of her children's penises.

Boyce is the second nanny to launch legal action against the family.

Former childminder Jessica Gibson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Rob Lowe last month (Apr08), alleging he touched her inappropriately on several occasions between September 2005 and January 2008.

Lowe's attorney Larry Stein has slammed the new allegations, accusing Boyce's lawyer Gloria Allred - who also represents Gibson - of "dragging (Lowe's) wife and children into the fray".

He says, "In response to a lawsuit against Laura Boyce by the Lowes, Ms. Allred filed a cross-complaint on behalf of Boyce, which contains false allegations, in an apparent attempt to divert the negative publicity which Allred's client, Gibson, has universally received.

"Although framed as a sexual harassment claim against both Sheryl and Rob Lowe, the cross-complaint alleges only words by Sheryl and never mentions any words or conduct by Rob whatsoever. The alleged statements by Sheryl are totally unrelated to, and do not provide any support for, Gibson's claim against Rob."

While to the highest degree bluesy strong rock acts of the Apostles of the '70s and '80s hailed from the United States (the south, to be claim), on that point were several exceptions to the rule, such as Canadian singer/guitarist Pat Travers. Born in Toronto on April 12, 1954, Travers number one picked up the guitar barely prior to entering his teens, later witnessing a local performance by the great Jimi Hendrix. It wasn't tenacious ahead Travers was studying the other top rock guitarists of the day (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, etc.), and paid his dues by playing in bar bands in the Quebec country. His number one true touring gig came his way when he dependant up with '50s rock n' undulate vet Ronnie Hawkins (best known for acting with a backing cast that would finally transform into The Band). But Travers' principal love was hard rock, so after a class, he jam-packed up his holding and headed to London. Shortly later touchdown in the U.K., Travers recorded a demo that would country him a recording deal with Polydor and result in the release of his debut, Dab Travers, during the spring of 1976. A performance at England's yearbook Reading Festival the same year just peaked stake, which resulted in iI more than releases in 1977, Makin' Magic and Putt It Straight (both of which followed a pre-Iron Maiden Nicko McBrain on drums), before Travers returned to North America and arrange his sights on the U.S. rock market. Hooking up with a fine financial backing band comprised of drummer Tommy Aldridge, guitarist Pat Thrall, and bassist Mars Cowling, the new Travers dance orchestra card premiered on 1979's Heat in the Street. This light-emitting diode to Travers' most commercially successful period, resulting in a geminate of Top 30 releases, 1979's Alive! Go For What You Know (considered by many Travers fans to be his finest hour) and 1980's Crash and Burn. But soon after the dawn of the '80s, bluesy hard rock seemed to chop-chop fall kO'd of party favour amongst the U.S. record buying public, in favour of slickly produced area rock, and by and by, MTV-approved bands. As a result, each subsequent Travers freeing sold less, as his last albums to come along on the U.S. album charts included 1981's Radio Active, 1982's Dim Pearl, and 1984's Hot Shot. Unhappy with Polydor, Travers opted to take a kick downstairs from cathartic albums for the remainder of the decennium, only continued to tour. Travers' 1990 comeback album, School of Hard Knocks, failed to re-spark interest on the charts, although he continued to issue new studio albums (Blues Tracks, Just a Touch, Megrims Magnet, etc.) and archival alive sets (Martin Luther King Biscuit Flower Hour, BBC Radio One Live in Concert) passim the decennary. Travers continues to go and record regularly (playing alongside the likes of Night Ranger's Jeff Watson, Cinderella's Tom Keifer, and Rick Derringer), and in 2001, performed as part of the 'Voices of Classic Rock' go. Travers emerged from the recording studio at one time more in 2003, with P.T. Power Trio, a recording that featured covers by the likes of Cream ("White Room"), Robin Trower ("Day of the Eagle"), and ZZ Top ("Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings"), among others.

George Clooney - Clooney Causes Chaos In New York

Hollywood heart-throb GEORGE CLOONEY caused chaos when he turned up at an office building in New York for a photoshoot - with female workers clamouring to catch a glimpse of the star.

Clooney arrived at the Hearst building at 10am on Tuesday (06May08) to shoot a layout for British film magazine Empire's 75th anniversary issue.

But news that the actor was in the vicinity soon spread, and groups of women began gathering in the lobby to wait for Clooney to emerge.

And, by the time the Clooney made his exit, the building was packed with admirers, all jostling to spot their idol.

A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "All the fashionistas lost their cool. You couldn't even get to the elevators because of the throng of women. The women cut out of work to hang in the lobby and catch a glimpse of him."

But Clooney reportedly took the huge crowds in good spirits and "danced with different women" who work in the building.
